ABOUT MARIE

Dr. Marie F. Stamps is

an expert educator passionate about providing high quality, comprehensive and inclusive settings for children, with a focus on supporting marginalized families & communities.

With a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Diverse Learning Communities, Dual Masters in Elementary Education and Special Education, as well as a Masters in School Building Leadership, Marie has over 25 years of experience as an educator, consultant, and administrator in New York City's education system.

Her current role as a Program Director of Queens County Educators for Tomorrow, a New York City early-childhood program serving families of color, along with her positions as an Educational Consultant at The Cooke Institute and an adjunct faculty member at Brooklyn College's Early Childhood and Art Education Program, underscore her dedication to the field.

Her passion for empowering parents is best observed in her work as a parent coach. Her diverse experiences enable her to understand the unique needs of children and families in a variety of settings. Moreover, they have given her a keen perspective about the inequity that exists in the U.S. educational system that produces disparate outcomes for Black and Brown communities.

At the heart of her research is both a professional and personal hope for a release of shame and guilt that Black and Brown folks are often burdened with because of their outcomes and insights that support equity and justice in educational settings.

She is a proud wife and mother of 3 beautiful children and her Cava-Tzu, Cookie.

Research: Black Parent Engagement Through the Lens of Critical
Consciousness (June 2024)

My recent study explored Black parents’ critical consciousness through a workshop on Black parents' perceptions of racism in the educational system and their ability to resist it… My findings demonstrated the toll Black parents experience simply by being Black in America and taking critical action to protect Black children and other Black parents. They also highlight the fatigue that these participants experience when existing in two opposing worlds, advocating for justice for their children while collaborating with the system designed to prevent justice.

Presenters were asked to consider: "How do scholar practitioners in the curriculum studies field understand, know, want, create, mistake, and cultivate peace in education, curriculum, pedagogy, politics, religion, economy, health, sexuality, etc. from many perspectives, or not?"
